Sony PSP 2 Graphics Processor Revealed?

A British company may have won the contract to design and build the next-generation graphics processor for the PSP2. Imagination Technologies Group announced in a press release this week that the company has signed a license agreement with a new partner, “a major consumer electronics company.” Industry sources say that the partner is almost certainly Sony, and that the SGX55x graphics chip will be used in the upcoming PSP2. The secrecy on the part of Imagination Technologies makes sense, because Sony is understandably unwilling to announce its plans for a PSP successor just yet. Imagination’s PowerVR MBX chip is already being used in the Apple iPhone, so Sony finds itself in good company with this manufacturer.

Sony PSP-3000 to Launch in Japan for £90+

The new version of the PlayStation Portable, the PSP-3000, will be available in Japan on October 16, 2008 for around £90.

The new PSP-3000 that promises a brighter and sharper LCD screen will launch first in Japan on October 16, 2008. With a price tage of approximately £90, the device can also be used for VoIP purposes using Skype. Unfortunately, the brighter screen doesn’t come without a price–it’ll shave off 20 to 30 minutes of your battery life. While it may not mean much, think of how much 30 minutes of playtime is when you’re bored out of your mind in a plane, a bus, or a ship with a PSP that’s ran out of battery life. Even more unfortunate still, it seems Sony is encouraing people to buy an extended battery pack to compensate for the loss of battery life. I guess this means there are no plans of improving the PSP-3000’s battery life in the future.

Underwater Wars Announced for PSP

Russian game developers Biart Studios have announced that their upcoming console shooter Underwater Wars will also make an appearance on the PSP. Underwater Wars is a 3rd-person action game currently in development for the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3. In the game you play a member of an elite US Navy Seal outfit that spends a lot of time underwater (hence the clunky title). According to the developers, the game takes place in a near-future conflict between China and the West, in which aquatic environments play a key role.
The console game uses on its own proprietary graphics engine, called the biEngine, and features both overland and underwater environments. The developers also promise that these will be fully destructible. There is no word yet on whether the PSP version will be a straightforward port of the console title or a different experience entirely.

While we aren’t quite sure how a full-fledged console game will translate to the portable system, we are excited to hear that developers are continuing to support the handheld, at a time when developer support in the West appears to be waning.

    Sony PSP

    sony-psp.jpg

We love to play games, and as the holidays approach, we keep having fewer reasons to hold out on buying a Sony PSP ($250) (yeah, we know it’s been out since March — but we weren’t around then). More intriguing games are approaching their release date, it’s got a built-in web browser, it plays video, MP3 and AAC music files, and shows off pictures like a champ. And if you’re planning on picking up a PS3, we’re pretty sure you’re going to want a PSP to use with it.

Sleek Design Sony PSP 2 concept

Awesome looking Sony PSP 2 concept
Check out this pic of a new Sony PSP 2 concept. It’s pretty sweet looking and has a pretty big screen. Kotaku had a contest to see what kind of cool PSP 2 concepts readers could come up with, and this is one of them. Watching movies on this one would be very nice. Unfortunately, they don’t really exist. There were some pretty interesting designs, and some haha funny ones, but this is one of my favorites.

Who’s number one again? The PSP is!

    imageimage

Can anyone ever be sick of good news? Maybe you guys are tired of hearing how well our beloved handheld is doing in Japan. But we doubt Sony minds the good news, and neither do we. However, we do mind coming up with a new headline for the same good news every single week. Maybe you guys can give us some suggestions in comments …
    Week of June 30th-July 6th, 2008:

    • PSP - 56,998 (559)
    • Nintendo DS - 48,540 (1,085)
    • Wii - 41,768 (2,757)
    • PlayStation 3 - 12,458 (1,901)
    • PlayStation 2 - 10,405 (1,363)
    • Xbox 360 - 3,807 (969)

The PSP outsold itself from last week, selling 559 more units. Its big brother, the PlayStation 3, didn’t fare so well — sales fell by almost 2,000 units.
