SongBird : no more itunes + limewire …

   Bird flipping through records

Like iTunes, Songbird has a mini-player which unlike iTunes, mini-player, looks great. Songbird has a lot going for it, but they still need to incorporate some key features that this preview leaves out. Things like an equalizer are absent in this preview. Once sufficient devices support, including iPod support, makes it into Songbird, Apple may need to watch their back - everyone loves the little open source app that makes it big, *cough* Firefox. Songbird may very well be THE music player/manager for all Linux users, beating out Amarok and RhthymBox. The preview released today is a “proof-of-concept” distribution, so it was only available for Windows. There is, however, a strong possibility of Songbird being released on Linux and Mac in the near future. I hope to hear more about Songbird in the future. Download the preview (from yousendit because Songbird’s server is down) and let me know what you think.

Samsung X360 ultraslim laptop

Slim Laptop from Samsung

Samsung appears to have made an incredibly hot little item. They call it the X360, which seems to infringe equally on Microsoft and Lenovo’s trademarks. Samsung took aim at the MacBook Air’s form factor and seems to have succeeded at taking some of the shine off of Apple’s wispy little offering. The X360 weighs slightly less (1.27kg) and although it doesn’t look quite as svelte, it sports quite a few more features: 3 USB ports, HDMI and VGA out, ExpressCard/34 slot, a memory card reader, 128GB SSD, and all the usual fixings. It has a 13.3″ screen and runs on an unspecified (probably selectable) Intel Centrino processor.

They don’t mention the dimensions, which is telling — sounds like they haven’t got Apple beat there. You just wait, Apple! Samsung got they eye on you.

Apple MacBook Pro with Multi-touch

image

We pretty much knew it was coming, but Apple has finally released its new MacBook Pro ($2000-$2800). The new models sport multi-touch trackpads that let you pinch, swipe, and rotate simply by using your fingers, like you would on an iPhone. They also include the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, ranging from 2.4-2.6 GHz, and built on a 45nm process with 6MB of cache. Nvidia GeForce graphics keep games running smoothly, and up to 4GB of RAM and high-capacity drives keep the power users happy. So the real question is, anyone looking to buy a used MacBook Pro?

iPhone 3G first look, what do you want to know?

Well, we got one from the fine folks at Vodafone NZ. Yeah, we’ll admit, between the early peek at the not too drastically changed firmware, guided tours, and announcement hands-on, there’s not a lot of mystery to the iPhone 3G at this point. But if you’ve got any burning questions we can answer with our shiny new Vodafone NZ iPhone 3G, hit us up in comments and we’ll update here with our findings. Stick around, more coming.
Reader questions
Leon: Does it feel any different in your hand than 1st gen iPhone?
We definitely do like the way it feels. It’s a little more slick (or slippery, depending on how wet your palms are with anticipation and/or summer sweat) because of the plastic back, but it’s well curved and comfortable. It doesn’t feel flimsy or plasticy at all.
Santz24: How wildly does it dance on the table compared to the first iPhone?
If you’re asking how the vibrate function compares to the original, we got the two buzzing side by side and they feel pretty much identical.
If you’re asking whether it wobbles on the table as you use it, yes, it does — but the amount of wobble depends on the type of surface. But even on a hard, flat surface it’s not really that bad, and we’re usually sticklers for that kind of thing.
Tom: Does it have Flash support?
Yeah, seems like a fruitless question that we all know the answer to — but we tested it anyway, and the answer is no, Apple didn’t sneak in Flash support so far as we can tell.
More after the break.

Jon: Whats the GPS like?
Well, one neat new tidbit is the little hovering, animated location ring as it tries to lock on your location. If it can’t get an exact lock on you with proper GPS, it does as before, it pulls in as close to the map as it thinks is accurate, centering approximately on where you’re at.
If it CAN get proper GPS, it gives you a blue dot with a transparent blue halo, which pings outward every second or so. So far we had a hard time getting the proper GPS lock without going outside.
Ja: Louder speaker?! Louder volume when holding to your ear?!
Calm down, Ja. Yea, the speaker is noticeably louder, thank god. The earpiece doesn’t sound all that much louder.

German users claim MacBook Air can cut through bread, flesh

Now, we know that the MacBook Air is one thin laptop, but some Apple forum members in Germany are claiming that the edge of the laptop is not only sharp — but downright dangerous. According to "Apple Talk" reader Bajuware, his MBA went kill-crazy all over his elbow while he was cold-chillin’ on his couch. The details are a little hard to suss out due to the language barrier (and machine translation), but it would appear the Air’s bottom edge made nasty work of the human flesh like someone had insulted its mother. Another MBA owner claims his computer is sharp enough to slice bread, though we assume it’s not used for buttering. Honestly, we’re not sure what kind of danger an innocent MacBook Air could really pose besides causing you to throw out your back constantly plugging in the AC to charge that not-quite-as-advertised battery.

iPhone upcomming!

The second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker

So we’ve got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing, and numerous units are floating around in super secret pockets. A trusted source got a chance to check one out, here’s what we’ve heard.

  • The first thing people will notice: the 2nd gen iPhone will be about the same size and shape as the first gen.
  • It will, of course, have 3G. And proper GPS!
  • The most noticeable physical difference is back of the phone is no longer metal — the whole thing is glossy black, from top to bottom. The volume buttons are now chrome.
  • Because it’s got a little less metal to deal with, it doesn’t have quite as many angular edges. The battery is (still) not removable.
  • The phone itself will be slightly thicker than the first gen device.
  • The headphone jack will no longer be recessed, and will finally be flush with the body.
  • The device itself uses roughly the same size and resolution screen as the first generation product.
  • No solid word on battery life or storage capacity.

It could ship (or be introduced) as early as July — but it’s worth noting that none of this is necessarily finalized, and any of it could change between now and its introduction. You really never know with Apple!
P.S. -Image via iPod Observer, MacRumors points out it’s probably just a case (which we’d likely agree with); we’re not by any means claiming the image above is the new iPhone, just an example of what it could look like given the info we received.
