iPhone 2.0 unlocked, iPhone 3G will hopefully follow soon…

Last weekend saw the introduction of an unlock solution for the latest iPhone firmware. The first-gen iPhone users will now be able to enjoy 2.0 firmware with any SIM card. The iPhone 3G is not there yet, but there’s some progress and we hope it would get unlocked some time soon too.

The popular iPhone Dev Team has come up with the latest version of their all-in-one Pwnage tool for setting your iPhones free via customized firmwares - much like the Windows Mobile community does it. However with the Pwnage Tool you can cook your own firmwares customized to your liking.

For those of you that are new to Pwning here’s a brief and simplified explanation. You take an original iPhone firmware file (freely downloadable), you run it through the Pwnage tool customizing stuff on the way (such as pre-installed applications, setups, even custom graphics) and finally you apply it to the iPhone the regular iTunes way. It’s that simple.

iPhone 3G will be unlocked soon

The new Pwnage 2.0 tool now allows you to (h)activate, jailbreak and unlock the first-gen iPhone running the latest 2.0 software. It’s a major upgrade to the iPhone functionality and actually makes the original iPhone software identical to the iPhone 3G.

Black iPhone Custom

iphone-custom-1.jpg

No, that’s not the elusive 3G iPhone. And no, it’s not a paint job either. Knight Creations’ Black iPhone Custom ($849) is a 16GB iPhone that has been upgraded with black replacement parts, including an anodized aluminum back and TiAlN-treated Apple logo and front bezel. If you just want to give your iPhone a new life, the iPhone Custom service ($299) lets you send it in and get the new armor installed for a lot cheaper. It took about a week from the time we sent our test iPhone in until the time our upgraded Darth phone arrived at Uncrate HQ. The fit and finish is nothing short of spectacular. While it’s tough to make the iPhone actually look better than Mr. Jobs intended, Knight Creations has pulled it off. Also, the beauty of the black-out service is that if your iPhone is a bit scuffed up, the replacement parts make it look absolutely new again. Also offered is a black iPod Nano ($99 yours/$329 new) and a black iPod Touch ($129 yours/$539 new).

First ever iPhone 3G unboxing coverage done by Engadget,

They’ve gone through a number of the new features on the device and in the 2.0 software release, but apologies in advance if you’re looking for side by side speed tests (there are some coverage issues where they are at). Video of the unboxing, new feature walkthrough, and GPS use (while on a train) after the break.

iPhone upcomming!

The second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker

So we’ve got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing, and numerous units are floating around in super secret pockets. A trusted source got a chance to check one out, here’s what we’ve heard.

  • The first thing people will notice: the 2nd gen iPhone will be about the same size and shape as the first gen.
  • It will, of course, have 3G. And proper GPS!
  • The most noticeable physical difference is back of the phone is no longer metal — the whole thing is glossy black, from top to bottom. The volume buttons are now chrome.
  • Because it’s got a little less metal to deal with, it doesn’t have quite as many angular edges. The battery is (still) not removable.
  • The phone itself will be slightly thicker than the first gen device.
  • The headphone jack will no longer be recessed, and will finally be flush with the body.
  • The device itself uses roughly the same size and resolution screen as the first generation product.
  • No solid word on battery life or storage capacity.

It could ship (or be introduced) as early as July — but it’s worth noting that none of this is necessarily finalized, and any of it could change between now and its introduction. You really never know with Apple!
P.S. -Image via iPod Observer, MacRumors points out it’s probably just a case (which we’d likely agree with); we’re not by any means claiming the image above is the new iPhone, just an example of what it could look like given the info we received.
