iPhone 2.0 unlocked, iPhone 3G will hopefully follow soon…

Posted by Usman on July 22, 2008

Last weekend saw the introduction of an unlock solution for the latest iPhone firmware. The first-gen iPhone users will now be able to enjoy 2.0 firmware with any SIM card. The iPhone 3G is not there yet, but there’s some progress and we hope it would get unlocked some time soon too.

The popular iPhone Dev Team has come up with the latest version of their all-in-one Pwnage tool for setting your iPhones free via customized firmwares - much like the Windows Mobile community does it. However with the Pwnage Tool you can cook your own firmwares customized to your liking.

For those of you that are new to Pwning here’s a brief and simplified explanation. You take an original iPhone firmware file (freely downloadable), you run it through the Pwnage tool customizing stuff on the way (such as pre-installed applications, setups, even custom graphics) and finally you apply it to the iPhone the regular iTunes way. It’s that simple.

The new Pwnage 2.0 tool now allows you to (h)activate, jailbreak and unlock the first-gen iPhone running the latest 2.0 software. It’s a major upgrade to the iPhone functionality and actually makes the original iPhone software identical to the iPhone 3G.

Apple App Store… iTunes update 7.7

Posted by Usman on July 14, 2008

image

With less than a day to go before the 3G iPhone hits the sweaty palms of fanboys in the U.S., Apple has launched its App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Filled to the digital brim with over 500 native applications (Free-$10), you can find software in nearly 20 different categories, including an official AIM app (finally!), a new Remote app from Apple that lets you control iTunes and Apple TV, tons of surprisingly great looking games, and apps for social-obsessives (Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter). You can download applications directly on your iPhone from anywhere or buy them through iTunes and then sync up. Old iPhone owners just need to wait on the iPhone 2.0 software update. Or not.

Posted by Usman on June 7, 2008

                        PSP Blender

After a long wait, Team M33 has released the long awaited custom firmware 3.80 M33. This release brings the changes found in the official 3.80 Sony firmware, including internet radio, but it also brings the ability to run homebrew applications and backed up ISO games. One of the coolest features added to 3.80 M33 is the ability to upgrade your PSP using the Network Update functionality of the XMB menu. This means that you will no longer have to follow M33 upgrading guides, as everything will be handled by the automatic system.

Visit Dark_Alex’s website to download 3.80 M33 and see it’s included readme.txt file.

Visit qj.net for complete release information.

3.80 M33 Requirements

  • PSP running 3.52 M33-3 or above

3.80 M33 Change Log

  • HEN core: user mode can load now signchecked files from flash.
  • Recovery: flash1 format will create flash1 directories after format.
  • This could fix some flash1 issues with the previous versions.
  • Network update from dark-alex.org page. By default is enabled. You can turn it off in recovery (when off, network update will download sony updates as usual).
  • Nids resolver for various kernel libraries.

PS3 firmware 2.40 said to be bringing in-game XMB, trophies

Posted by Usman on June 4, 2008

It’s not confirmed by Sony just yet, but Videogaming247 says it has it on "good authority" that the upcoming version 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 will at long last bring with it in-game XMB, as well as the slightly less-anticipated trophy support. If those sources are to be believed, the update will be dropping sometime in June, with some speculation further pointing to a release in advance of Metal Gear Solid 4’s June 12th launch. There’s apparently still some testing to be done to ensure that the in-game XMB will work with all titles, however, and it seems like features like trophies and user-music via XMB will only be supported in games created with the new developers tools that have apparently already been released in advance of the firmware update.

Stream MP3’s with Google Inline MP3 Player

Posted by Fawaz on May 21, 2008

This is why i just love FireFox. With the help of Greasemonkey extension, install Google Inline MP3 Player script and stream MP3 files whenever you face them. It works like this, first install Greasemonkey extension, you can get it from here, install the script and refresh the page on which your MP3 is located. The script will create a [Play] right next to the MP3, click on it listen to MP3 and when you’re done hide the player. Here’s an example, I have put an MP3 file, install the script and refresh the page.

A Vista theme for iPhone? Yes, really.

Posted by Usman on May 20, 2008

The latest third-party iPhone app to draw blogosphere buzz this morning is most definitely not Apple-approved.

Does this logo look familiar?

VistaPerfection iPhone theme

The object of hilarity and defamation is VistaPerfection 2.0, a theme by developer Spec-Works that plops the Windows Vista GUI onto the iPhone. To run it, you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone (see video), the SummerBoard app, and a wicked sense of humor.

Spec-Works reports that the application took "a couple days" to create and includes more than 90 icons, wallpaper, and sounds, including the Vista log-in and log-off chime and a revamped taskbar.

Your eyes do not deceive–Spec-Works has made iPhone Vista-friendly.

(Credit: ModMyiFone)

Quite a few tech bloggers have been happily jabbing away at the oxymoronic theme. Technabob, for instance, recommends it for those who are "ready and willing to deface [their] glorious chrome and glass iPhone with Microsoft’s bloatware user interface."

The general consensus excuses VistaPerfection as a hack created for its own sake, though Zach Epstein of The Boy Genius Report charitably concedes that it might be useful for "a Vista addict [who has] begrudgingly picked up an iPhone but always loathed its clean UI."

It’s true that design currents carry the visual style of Apple products into third-party Windows themes and apps, like ReadAir, ObjectDock, and the Macfox Firefox theme, and not the other way around. But that turning of tables is what makes the theme so deliciously amusing. VistaPerfection 2.0 does not come bundled with an installer, and those who want to play with the stuff of Steve Jobs’ nightmares should consult ModMyiFone for the installation guide and tips.
