WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Detail and News.

New Hero Class, new continent, new level cap, and more!

It’s official: The next World of WarCraft expansion is coming; it’s called Wrath of the Lich King, and will open up the continent of Northrend to players of level 68 and above. This second expansion will focus on the return of Arthas Menethil, a.k.a. the Lich King, ruler of the Scourge, and one of the most powerful beings in all of Azeroth. This semi-sequel to the saga of Arthas (from WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne) is intended for experienced players with a couple level 70 characters in their pockets.

The September issue of Games for Windows: The Official Magazine (on sale soon) has tons of details, but for now here’s a quick rundown of what’s in store….

Level Cap: 80
Skill Cap: 450
Continent: Northrend
Number of Zones: 10 (tentatively), for levels 68 and above
Profession: Inscription
Class: Death Knight (first-ever Hero Class)
Features: Outdoor PVP zone with siege weapons and destructible buildings.
Release Date: You’re kidding, right?

The biggest news for existing players is the introduction of the Death Knight, the first new class since WOW’s launch — and, coincidentally, its first Hero Class, too. Other big new features include the introduction of siege weapons and destroyable buildings in both a new Battleground and a brand-new outdoor PVP zone. What Wrath of the Lich King won’t have is any content for new characters: no new races, no new level-1-to-20 zones back in the old world, and little change to the old world.

SongBird : no more itunes + limewire …

   Bird flipping through records

Like iTunes, Songbird has a mini-player which unlike iTunes, mini-player, looks great. Songbird has a lot going for it, but they still need to incorporate some key features that this preview leaves out. Things like an equalizer are absent in this preview. Once sufficient devices support, including iPod support, makes it into Songbird, Apple may need to watch their back - everyone loves the little open source app that makes it big, *cough* Firefox. Songbird may very well be THE music player/manager for all Linux users, beating out Amarok and RhthymBox. The preview released today is a “proof-of-concept” distribution, so it was only available for Windows. There is, however, a strong possibility of Songbird being released on Linux and Mac in the near future. I hope to hear more about Songbird in the future. Download the preview (from yousendit because Songbird’s server is down) and let me know what you think.

If you’ve already grabbed a new copy of VLC from an update, are you liking the new menus and interface, or are you tempted to switch back? Share your take in the comments. Ten years and counting…

Google Cake

The Google doodle tradition started a long time ago (in summer 1999, in fact) when Larry and Sergey put a stick figure on the homepage to signify that they were out of the office at Burning Man. Nothing against stick figures, but our logo designs have become rather more varied since then. Today you’ll see a special design that commemorates our 10th birthday. We’ve incorporated a little bit of history by using the original Google logo from 1998. And since everyone keeps asking what we’d like for our birthday (besides cake and party hats) — the first thing we thought of was a nice new server rack.

YouTube error - we’re sorry, this video is no longer available

YouTube Video Error

“we’re sorry, this video is no longer available”

Sick of pulling your hair out over this error? OK folks the fix is easy and the short answer is, this is a standards compliance and implementation issue. The fast fix is, use Flock. Flock is a new version of the FireFox/Netscape web browser and it’s designed for use with Web 2.0.

Problem solved! Who does YouTube think they are anyway Microsoft?

If you are ademant about not using a really great new web browser then you could try to download the latest version of Flash and rebooting your network router etc. too, that might help. Also make sure that none of your systems are spamming your network by running a free online virus scan from places like pandasoftware.com.
