iPhone 2.0 unlocked, iPhone 3G will hopefully follow soon…

Posted by Usman on July 22, 2008

Last weekend saw the introduction of an unlock solution for the latest iPhone firmware. The first-gen iPhone users will now be able to enjoy 2.0 firmware with any SIM card. The iPhone 3G is not there yet, but there’s some progress and we hope it would get unlocked some time soon too.

The popular iPhone Dev Team has come up with the latest version of their all-in-one Pwnage tool for setting your iPhones free via customized firmwares - much like the Windows Mobile community does it. However with the Pwnage Tool you can cook your own firmwares customized to your liking.

For those of you that are new to Pwning here’s a brief and simplified explanation. You take an original iPhone firmware file (freely downloadable), you run it through the Pwnage tool customizing stuff on the way (such as pre-installed applications, setups, even custom graphics) and finally you apply it to the iPhone the regular iTunes way. It’s that simple.

The new Pwnage 2.0 tool now allows you to (h)activate, jailbreak and unlock the first-gen iPhone running the latest 2.0 software. It’s a major upgrade to the iPhone functionality and actually makes the original iPhone software identical to the iPhone 3G.

We give PS Store’s new video service a go: PC-to-PSP

Posted by Usman on July 19, 2008

It’s an endearing feature to have, knowing you could have tons of movies and television shows at your finger tips. There’s no need to go to the local video store (seriously, who does this anymore?) or even wait on those movies to arrive from mail-based rentals. However, we still have many questions regarding this new content for the PS Store.
We wonder if the PS Store is really ready to handle this kind of transaction and will it be easy to use? To help answer these questions, we gave the new video service a try and have presented a mini-walkthrough that’ll hopefully give some insight into getting started with the new service.

Apple MacBook Pro with Multi-touch

Posted by Usman on July 16, 2008

image

We pretty much knew it was coming, but Apple has finally released its new MacBook Pro ($2000-$2800). The new models sport multi-touch trackpads that let you pinch, swipe, and rotate simply by using your fingers, like you would on an iPhone. They also include the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, ranging from 2.4-2.6 GHz, and built on a 45nm process with 6MB of cache. Nvidia GeForce graphics keep games running smoothly, and up to 4GB of RAM and high-capacity drives keep the power users happy. So the real question is, anyone looking to buy a used MacBook Pro?

Apple App Store… iTunes update 7.7

Posted by Usman on July 14, 2008

image

With less than a day to go before the 3G iPhone hits the sweaty palms of fanboys in the U.S., Apple has launched its App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Filled to the digital brim with over 500 native applications (Free-$10), you can find software in nearly 20 different categories, including an official AIM app (finally!), a new Remote app from Apple that lets you control iTunes and Apple TV, tons of surprisingly great looking games, and apps for social-obsessives (Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter). You can download applications directly on your iPhone from anywhere or buy them through iTunes and then sync up. Old iPhone owners just need to wait on the iPhone 2.0 software update. Or not.

American Airlines to test in-flight WiFi tomorrow

Posted by Usman on June 29, 2008

You heard right, folks. American Airlines is planning to open up the world wide web to passengers on board an unspecified round-trip flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles. The Gogo service, provided via Aircell, will be free for patrons tomorrow, but will eventually run users $12.95 for flights greater than three hours and $9.95 for trips under said threshold. We’re also told that more trials are expected to get going on flights between New York and San Francisco and New York and Miami, though no time frame is given for when the service would escape the beta stage and hit mass implementation. Additionally, the Gogo system is supposed to "prioritize the flow of data so that passengers downloading movies or large documents won’t prevent other passengers from getting their email," so don’t expect to use that excuse for not sending in those Q2 close reports.
