Entire NES jammed into its cartridge

Nintendo NESThis awesome NES casemod manages to squeeze a fully-functional Nintendo 8-bit console into the body of one of the system’s own game cartridges.

The Fami-Card started out its life as an original Super Mario Brothers

cartridge. French modder Kotomi carefully ripped out its guts and transplanted them with the innards of one of those NOAC (NES on a Chip) system clones.

The console manages to cram in an NES cartridge slot, power and reset buttons, a pair of joystick ports and composite video and stereo audio outputs.

There’s something just a little mind-bending about a game cartridge that isn’t a cartridge at all, and instead is a console itself. If you think about the concept too hard, it might just cause a rift in the space-time continuum.

‘Wii 64’ is a Nintendo 64-infused Wii

How’s this for ingenuity? USA! USA! USA! In what can only be described as the ultimate in convergence devices, some guy on eBay is selling a Wii with a Nintendo 64 cartridge slot that actually plays real games. What’s most impressive, I suppose, is that the whole thing looks pretty natural with the slight exception of the side panel jutting outwards a bit to make room for the N64 controller port.

Take note, Nintendo: when you release Wii HD or whatever it’ll be called, please include a cartridge slot with various adapters for NES, Super NES, and N64 games.

What Does an Obama Presidency Mean for Videogames?

A look at how this election may have reshaped Barack Obama’s views on games.

In a monumental win over John McCain tonight, Barack Obama was just elected the 44th President of the United States of America. And after some the of the excitement of this historic election (regardless of one’s political bias, it’s an incredible step forward for the nation) subsides, one of the questions on some gamers’ minds is whether this election will have any impact on their favorite hobby.

Dead Rising 2 coming, but Capcom not developing

PhotobucketA source close to Canadian developer Blue Castle Games has revealed to Eurogamer that the studio is making a sequel to Dead Rising for Capcom. You probably don’t know that developer at all, and we’d forgive you for that as they have only created one game in their lifetime - The Bigs.

They are also working on another title called MLB Front Office Manager, which is probably in development alongside Dead Rising 2. Hopefully they don’t get the two games mixed up, as zombies in baseball would be weird.

Nintendo Announces Dual Camera DSi

Nintendo has announced a new “complementary” version of its DS handheld. The DSi will sell alongside the current DS, and gains a slew of new features, most notably two cameras — one in the back of the case for taking pictures and one below the screen for grabbing snaps of the user. We’re sure the DS homebrew scene will come up with some kind of video-VoIP solution, but we guess that Nintendo will be using this second camera as yet another interface for controlling games.

Nintendo DSI Game Console

The DSi also gains an SD card slot and a music player, and will ship with a built in web browser. Better still, the whole console is thinner, despite the screens growing to 3.25 inches apiece. The price on launch will be a slightly more expensive ¥190,000, or around $180, and it will be on sale in Japan on November 1st.

Shake, Rattle and Roll: Maracas for Wii

 VWIOT004500_02_L (1)

Brando (LABDEX listing: Beloved Crapware Vendor), has released a couple of shaking, shimmying maracas for the Wii, named the "Wii Samba DE Hammer ".

They are, like most Wiimote accessories, just white plastic toys with Wiimote-shaped holes in them. This particular set also requires the nunchuck, and is designed to be used with Gearbox Software’s Samba De Amigo game. They cost $15.

Given that this kind of Wii add-on requires little know-how other than some model-making skills, we thought we’d suggest a few home-made projects:

The new GTA is the old GTA

Ah, the circle is completed. The GTA that we knew and fell in love with back in the ’90s is making a comeback in spirit with GTA: Chinatown Wars on the DS. Yes, the cel-shaded look is trendy but the isometric viewpoint and map/minigame screen are very suited to the DS (more natural than the Wii, apparently).

Somehow I doubt it will have the same level of ultraviolence that GTA and GTA II had (gouranga!), but the screens (here and here) are encouraging otherwise.
